St Reign was founded in 2017 by Samkelisiwe Mhlongo-Stshedi, who is also the head designer of the brand.We operate from our home studio in Amanzimtoti, south coast of Durban.
St Reign is a minimalist luxe craft brand that merges craft and design, using old age leather crafting techniques and a minimalist approach to design. Some bags tells the story of the the three women (mom, aunt and gran) who at the core inspire and influence Samkelisiwe as a designer.
Our first collection debuted at Design Indaba Emerging Creatives 2020.
In 2021, we showcased at Future of Fashion Indaba and featured in their fashion film, themed around Ubuntu and Fashion- the shared economy and the future of fashion.
In 2022 St Reign was nominated for the Accessory Designer of the Year award at the inaugural Fashion Industry Awards South Africa.
St Reign is a slow fashion brand and we advocate for sustainabilty and transparency. Each bag is handcrafted by hand.We source only local leather from SA tanneries. Most of our bags are vegtan leather, which is a leather tanned using plant material and no chemicals that can harm the environment. All our waste material is used to create new designs, nothing is wasted or thrown away. We use Kraft paperbags to package our orders. While the journey to being fully sustainable is a long and not simple one, for a smaller self funded brand like ours, we will keep ensuring that we improving.
All our bags are made by Samkelisiwe and for now, St Reign is a one woman team.
